Facebook Ad Sizes 2026: Image and Video Specs for Every Placement

Facebook Ad Dimensions in 2026

In 2026, Meta’s own Ads Guide recommends 1440 x 1800 px (4:5) for Facebook Feed image and video ads, 1440 x 2560 px (9:16) for Stories and Reels, and at least 1080 x 1080 px (1:1) for carousel cards, Marketplace, Search results and the Right column. Images can be JPG or PNG up to 30 MB. Videos can be MP4, MOV or GIF up to 4 GB. The old 1200 x 628 px horizontal size is no longer what Meta recommends for Feed.

Every number below was copied from Meta’s Ads Guide as archived between 16 and 23 September 2026. Each placement links to its own page in the guide. Meta changes these specs without announcing it, so check the linked page before a big production run.

Facebook ad image sizes 2026: the master table by placement

This is the spec sheet your designer and copywriter need. “Recommended” is the resolution Meta suggests. “Minimum” is the smallest file Ads Manager accepts. Character counts are Meta’s recommendations, not hard cut-offs.

All image placements take JPG or PNG, and every placement with a listed limit caps image files at 30 MB. Instagram Feed and Explore also allow up to 30 hashtags. Meta advises against putting text on images in three placements because the image renders small: the Right column, in-stream video and the Facebook Reels image ad.

How long a static image stays on screen also differs: Meta says an image ad shows for eight seconds in Facebook Stories, 5 to 16 seconds in Instagram Stories and five seconds in Messenger Stories, or until the viewer swipes away.

Facebook video ad pixel size, ratio and length by placement

Every Meta video placement asks for the same encoding: H.264 compression, square pixels, fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or higher. Videos should not contain edit lists or special boxes in the file container. File types are MP4, MOV or GIF, except Instagram Reels, which lists MP4 and MOV only. Maximum file size is 4 GB everywhere.

Length allowed is not the same as length watched. Meta’s guide spells out what happens to long videos in the short placements:

  • Facebook Stories: videos of 15 seconds or less play in full. Longer videos are split into Stories cards; Facebook shows one, two or three cards, then offers “Play Full”.
  • Instagram Stories: videos under 16 seconds play in full. At 16 seconds or longer they may be split into cards.
  • Messenger Stories: 15 seconds or less plays in full, longer videos are split into cards with a “Keep Watching” option.
  • In-stream video: ads of 15 seconds or less play in full. Longer ads show the first 15 seconds and then truncate, and ads may be skippable after the first 5 seconds.

So if one video has to run across Stories and in-stream, put the offer and the brand inside the first 15 seconds.

One Feed detail catches people out. Meta’s Feed video page says that with the Awareness objective, or with performance goals such as Maximize reach of ads or Maximize 2-second continuous video views, the headline, description and call-to-action button are not displayed on Facebook Feed on mobile. If your video depends on a “Book now” button, either the button has to be in the video itself or the campaign needs a different objective.

Safe zones for Stories and Reels ads, in pixels

Meta’s guidance for Facebook Reels, Instagram Reels, Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories image ads is to keep roughly 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and other key elements. Those strips get covered by the profile icon, the caption and the call-to-action. For Instagram Reels, Meta adds that this also protects your design on phones with screens taller than 9:16.

Here is that rule converted into pixels for the two 9:16 sizes you will actually export:

CanvasKeep clear: topKeep clear: bottomKeep clear: each sideUsable box for text and logos
1440 x 2560 (Meta’s recommended 9:16)358 px896 px86 pxabout 1,267 x 1,306 px, from y = 358 to y = 1,664
1080 x 1920269 px672 px65 pxabout 950 x 979 px, from y = 269 to y = 1,248

Two placements use a different rule. For Facebook Stories video and Messenger Stories image ads, Meta says to leave about 14% (250 px) at the top and 20% (340 px) at the bottom. For Messenger Stories video, it says 14% (250 px) at the top and bottom. Those pixel figures do not match 14% and 20% of a 1920 px canvas exactly (that would be 269 px and 384 px), so treat them as rough guides. The simple fix is to design every 9:16 asset to the stricter 14/35/6 rule. It covers all the vertical placements at once.

In practice, the bottom 35% is the zone people break. Your offer line, price or phone number belongs in the middle band, not at the bottom where a call-to-action button will sit on top of it. For ideas on what to put in that band, the Stories and Reels series in our roundup of successful Instagram campaigns are a good place to start.

Carousel ad and collection ad specs

Carousel (Facebook Feed)

From Meta’s carousel spec page:

  • Cards: 2 to 10, each with its own image or video.
  • Ratio and size: 1:1, at least 1080 x 1080 px. Aspect ratio tolerance is 3%.
  • Files: images JPG or PNG up to 30 MB; video MP4, MOV or GIF up to 4 GB, 1 second to 240 minutes.
  • Text: primary text 80 characters, headline 20 characters, description 18 characters. A landing page URL is required.

The carousel headline is 20 characters, not the 40 that most placements allow. “Free tax review” fits. “Book your free tax planning review” does not.

Collection (Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed)

Meta’s collection spec page describes a cover image or video followed by 3 product images, which opens an Instant Experience when tapped. The specs:

  • Cover: the first media asset from your Instant Experience, 1.91:1 to 1:1, at least 1080 x 1080 px.
  • Files: images JPG or PNG up to 30 MB; video MP4, MOV or GIF up to 4 GB.
  • Text: primary text 125 characters, headline 40 characters. A landing page URL and an Instant Experience are required.
  • Instagram Feed collection: same ratios and limits, plus a minimum of 500 x 500 px for the image or video.

One asset set for all placements: the three masters to export

Meta’s 2026 recommendations come down to three ratios, so you only need three master files per creative concept:

Master fileUse it forWhy this size
1440 x 1800 (4:5)Facebook Feed image and video, Facebook video feeds, Instagram Feed image, Instagram Explore imageMeta’s recommended resolution for each of these placements
1440 x 2560 (9:16)Facebook Stories and Reels, Instagram Stories and Reels, Messenger Stories, Instagram Feed and Explore videoRecommended for Stories and Reels; the placements that list 1080 x 1920 take the same 9:16 ratio
1440 x 1440 (1:1)Carousel cards, Marketplace, Search results, Right column, in-stream video, collection coverClears the “at least 1080 x 1080” line and matches the 1:1 size Meta lists for Facebook video feeds

If your team already works at 1080 px (1080 x 1350, 1080 x 1920, 1080 x 1080), those files have the same ratios and clear every minimum width in the tables above. They are simply below the 1440 px resolution Meta now recommends for Feed, Stories and Reels. For new work, I would start at 1440 and let Meta scale down.

How the three files reach the right placements is changing. Social Media Today reported on 12 October 2026 that Meta has removed manual placement controls for Sales, Leads, Engagement and App promotion objectives, while Awareness and Traffic keep them for now. Meta’s suggested alternative is uploading several images and videos into one ad and controlling which version shows in which placement. Since you can’t always switch a placement off, plan on every ad being seen in Feed, Stories and Reels. Give Ads Manager all three masters so it never has to crop a 4:5 file into a 9:16 slot.

The objective you pick does not change these dimensions. On each placement page in Meta’s guide, the objective selector only changes which calls to action are available. A “website conversion” (Sales) ad in Feed uses the same 1440 x 1800 file as an Awareness ad.

Copy-ready export checklist for Figma and Canva

Set these up once as a template file, the closest thing to a “Facebook ad grid PSD” you need. Each row is one frame or page, named so the file name tells the media buyer where it goes.

Figma (from Figma’s export formats and settings and export help articles):

  1. Create the frames above at exact pixel sizes.
  2. Select a frame, find the Export section near the bottom of the right sidebar and click the plus to add an export setting.
  3. Choose JPG (Figma exports JPG at High quality by default) or PNG, and keep the scale at 1x so the file comes out at the frame’s exact size. Typing a value with a “w” or “h” suffix forces a fixed width or height instead.
  4. Set the color profile to sRGB in the export settings.
  5. Export every frame at once with File > Export (Shift Command E on Mac, Shift Ctrl E on Windows).

Canva (from Canva’s download file types help page):

  1. Create a design with custom dimensions for each master size.
  2. Download as JPG or PNG. The size can be set with a slider or typed in.
  3. For JPG, choose High quality. Quality controls and “Limit size” (a cap in KB) are paid-plan features: Canva Pro, Canva for Teams, Education and Nonprofits.
  4. For video, download MP4, then check the encoding list below before upload.

Video export, pass/fail before upload (all from Meta’s video spec pages):

  • Codec H.264, square pixels, fixed (not variable) frame rate, progressive scan. Pass or fail.
  • Audio stereo AAC at 128 kbps or more. Pass or fail.
  • No edit lists or special boxes in the container. Re-export from your editor rather than uploading a trimmed phone clip.
  • Under 4 GB, and within the length window for every placement it will run in. Messenger Stories stops at 60 seconds, Facebook Stories at 3 minutes.
  • Captions: Meta lists them as “optional, but recommended”, and its Facebook Reels page says auto captioning is not supported there. Burn them in for Reels.

Aspect ratio tolerance: the math that decides whether a file fits

Meta lists an aspect ratio tolerance on most placements: 3% for Facebook Feed, video feeds, Facebook Reels images, Search, in-stream and carousel, and 1% for Stories (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger), Instagram Feed, Explore and Reels. Meta does not publish its formula. The worked examples below read it as the percentage difference from the target ratio.

  • A 1080 x 1880 vertical (a 1080 x 1920 screenshot with the status bar cropped off) has a ratio of 0.5745. True 9:16 is 0.5625. That is about 2.1% off: inside the 3% tolerance for a Facebook Reels image, outside the 1% tolerance for Facebook Stories, Instagram Stories and Instagram Reels.
  • A 1080 x 1900 vertical is about 1.05% off 9:16, so it just misses the 1% line. Small crops matter.
  • A 1080 x 1320 Feed image is about 2.3% off 4:5. It falls inside the 3% Facebook Feed tolerance, but there is no reason to ship it when 1080 x 1350 is exact.
  • A 1200 x 628 horizontal image is 1.91:1. It still sits inside the accepted range for Search results, in-stream images, Facebook video feeds, Instagram Feed and collection covers. But Facebook Feed now lists 4:5 only, and a 1.91:1 image takes up far less of a phone screen than 4:5.

Facebook ad sizes 2025 vs 2026: what changed

Comparing two archived copies of the same Facebook Feed image page shows the shift. On 2 July 2025 it listed a ratio range of 1.91:1 to 4:5 and two recommended resolutions, 1440 x 1440 (1:1) and 1440 x 1800 (4:5). On 16 September 2026 it listed a single ratio, 4:5, at 1440 x 1800. File size (30 MB), minimum width (600 px), the 3% tolerance, and text guidance (50 to 150 characters of primary text, 27-character headline) did not change. The 1:1 and 1.91:1 options still appear on the Facebook video feeds page. If you are still exporting 1080 x 1080 or 1200 x 628 as your main Feed size, you are designing to an older spec.

If a spec sheet still leads with 1200 x 628 for Feed, it predates even the July 2025 version of Meta’s guide, which already listed 1:1 and 4:5 as the recommended Feed resolutions. Check the date on any spec sheet against Meta’s live guide.

Why Ads Manager rejects or crops your creative, and the fix

Most “wrong size” problems trace back to a line in Meta’s technical requirements. Use this as a pre-launch check:

Running the same campaign on X as well? The X ads guide lists its image and video sizes, which differ from Meta’s.

Write the copy to the shortest limit, not the longest

Text limits vary more than image sizes do. Meta’s recommended primary text runs from 40 characters (Facebook Reels) and 44 (Instagram Reels) to 125 for most placements and 150 for Feed. Headlines run from 20 characters (carousel) and 25 (Marketplace video) to 27 (Feed), 40 (most placements) and 55 (Facebook Reels). Under Advantage+ placements one ad can show in all of them, so:

  1. Make the first 40 characters of primary text work alone. That is all a Reels viewer is promised.
  2. Keep the headline at 20 to 27 characters if the ad might run as a carousel or in Feed.
  3. Use the description (30 characters in Search, Marketplace and in-stream; 18 in carousel) for the proof point, not the offer.

Getting sizes right only stops the platform from working against you. Whether the ad pays back depends on the offer and the economics, which our Facebook ads cost breakdown works through with real numbers. Frequently asked questions

What is the Facebook ad image size for 2026?

Meta's Ads Guide recommends 1440 x 1800 pixels at a 4:5 ratio for Facebook Feed image ads, with a minimum of 600 pixels wide and 750 high. Stories and Reels images should be 1440 x 2560 at 9:16. Marketplace, Search results and Right column images should be at least 1080 x 1080 at 1:1. All accept JPG or PNG up to 30 MB.

What are the Facebook ad sizes in pixels?

Three sizes cover nearly every placement: 1440 x 1800 (4:5) for Feed, 1440 x 2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels, and 1440 x 1440 or at least 1080 x 1080 (1:1) for carousel cards, Marketplace, Search, in-stream and the Right column. The 1080 versions (1080 x 1350, 1080 x 1920) share the same ratios and clear every listed minimum.

What size should a Facebook video ad be in 2026?

Use 1440 x 1800 (4:5) for Facebook Feed video and 1440 x 2560 (9:16) for Stories and Reels. In-stream video takes 16:9 or 1:1 at a minimum of 1080 x 1080. Export MP4 or MOV with H.264, square pixels, a fixed frame rate, progressive scan and stereo AAC audio at 128 kbps or more. The maximum file size is 4 GB.

What is the best aspect ratio for Facebook ads?

4:5 for Feed and 9:16 for Stories and Reels, because those are the ratios Meta's 2026 guide recommends for each. Use 1:1 for carousels, Marketplace and Search. Watch the tolerance: Stories and Instagram placements allow only 1% deviation, while Facebook Feed allows 3%, so a 1080 x 1900 vertical file already falls outside the Stories limit.

What is the safe zone for Facebook Reels and Stories ads?

Meta advises keeping about 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text and logos. On a 1440 x 2560 canvas that means 358 px at the top, 896 px at the bottom and 86 px on each side, leaving a usable box of about 1,267 x 1,306 px. On 1080 x 1920 it is 269, 672 and 65 px.

Is 1200 x 628 still a Facebook ad size?

Only for some placements. A 1.91:1 image like 1200 x 628 is still accepted in Search results, in-stream images, Facebook video feeds, Instagram Feed and collection covers. But Meta's September 2026 Facebook Feed image spec lists 4:5 at 1440 x 1800 as the ratio, and a horizontal image fills much less of a phone screen.

What are the Facebook post dimensions for 2026?

Meta's Ads Guide covers ads, not organic Page posts, so it does not list post sizes. Ads and organic posts share the same Feed, though, so the safest choice is the ad spec: 1440 x 1800 at 4:5 for a single image post and 1440 x 2560 at 9:16 for Stories and Reels.
