Digital marketing costs from $399 a month for one managed channel to $25,000 or more for an outsourced marketing department, and ad spend is billed on top of both. Among US agencies that publish prices, entry-level Google Ads management starts at $399 a month (GrowPep), multi-channel packages run from $2,800 to $8,900+ (Illumine8), and a full outsourced team runs $8,625 for 60 hours to $25,000 for 200 hours a month (Red Branch Media). The media itself adds a median $66.69 per Google search lead across all industries and $93.69 for business services, per the 2026 LocaliQ benchmarks.
Every price below comes from the provider’s own pricing page or a named survey, checked in October and November 2026. Use the service table to price one channel, the three sample budgets to price a whole plan, and the percent-of-revenue benchmarks to check whether the total fits your business.

Digital marketing cost by service: published 2026 prices

Three things in this table change what a quote really costs.
Hours are the honest unit. Clutch’s pricing data on 106,043 digital marketing companies puts US agencies at $100 to $149 an hour, so a $3,000 monthly retainer buys roughly 20 to 30 hours. Red Branch’s Bronze+ tier works out to $136.56 an hour ($10,925 for 80 hours). Our breakdown of what a full service marketing agency charges per hour applies the same test to every published tier.
Percentage fees step up at breakpoints. WebFX charges a flat $750 up to $5,000 of ad spend, then the greater of $975 or 15%. A budget that drifts just past $5,000 moves the fee from $750 to $975 for almost no extra media.
Setup fees and terms hide in the fine print. WebFX bills a first month of $1,200, $2,250 or $5,800 on its PPC plans, BizIQ charges $658 to $1,398 to set up social, 1909 Digital charges $3,000 to set up ads, and WebFX SEO, SkyeLine and Refine Labs management all require 6 months. More than 30 bundles are broken down line by line in our guide to digital marketing packages and what they include.
How much is digital advertising? Media costs on top of the fee
The ad budget is usually the biggest line, and it goes straight to the platform. The 2026 WordStream and LocaliQ report is based on 13,474 US search campaigns running April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026, and its “averages” are medians. Here are the service categories most relevant to professional and local service firms:

| Industry (2026) | Median cost per click | Median cost per lead |
|---|---|---|
| Attorneys & Legal Services | $9.87 | $131.63 |
| Business Services | $5.87 | $93.69 |
| Home & Home Improvement | $8.33 | $90.92 |
| Finance & Insurance | $3.39 | $74.44 |
| Dentists & Dental Services | $8.00 | $72.97 |
| All 23 industries | $5.42 | $66.69 |
| Personal Services | $7.17 | $54.60 |
| Physicians & Surgeons | $4.76 | $40.04 |
Read each column as its own benchmark. Because every figure is a separate median across campaigns, cost per click divided by conversion rate will not reproduce the published cost per lead. All 23 categories with year-over-year change are in our Google Ads CPC by industry table.
The minimum ad budget that gives Google enough data
Google says to judge a Target CPA bid strategy over the last 30 days “including at least 30 conversions” (Google Ads Help). Multiply 30 by your industry’s cost per lead and you have the monthly media that lets the algorithm learn. Google also bills no more than 30.4 times your average daily budget in a month (Google Ads Help), so divide by 30.4 for the daily setting.
| Industry | Median cost per lead | Media for 30 leads a month | Daily budget to enter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Attorneys & Legal Services | $131.63 | $3,948.90 | $129.90 |
| Business Services | $93.69 | $2,810.70 | $92.46 |
| Home & Home Improvement | $90.92 | $2,727.60 | $89.72 |
| Finance & Insurance | $74.44 | $2,233.20 | $73.46 |
| Dentists & Dental Services | $72.97 | $2,189.10 | $72.01 |
| All industries | $66.69 | $2,000.70 | $65.81 |
| Personal Services | $54.60 | $1,638.00 | $53.88 |
Below those numbers, run Maximize conversions and expect slower learning; Target CPA can start without history, but the evaluation window will be thin. LinkedIn sets its own floor: its minimum is $10 a day for any ad format and it suggests $25 a day for new advertisers (LinkedIn), before any agency fee.
Three digital marketing budgets, priced line by line
These are worked examples for a professional or business service firm, built only from the published prices above. Leads are estimated at the Business Services median of $93.69 per Google lead, which is a planning baseline, not a forecast. Swap in your own industry row.
$2,000 a month: one channel done properly
| Line item | Provider and tier | Monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads media | Paid to Google; daily budget $44.41 | $1,350 |
| Google Ads management | GrowPep Essential (up to $3,000 spend, 2 campaigns); $199 setup once | $399 |
| SEO direction | One hour of senior consulting at Digitaleer’s published $200/hr; you make the edits | $200 |
| Email follow-up | ActiveCampaign Plus, 1,000 contacts, billed yearly | $49 |
| Total | $1,998 |
What it buys: about 14 search leads a month at the benchmark, so media plus management comes to about $121 per lead. That is under the 30-lead Target CPA threshold, so start on Maximize conversions. The SEO hour comes from Digitaleer’s pricing page. What it does not buy: content production, social, or a second ad platform. Adding any of them at this budget splits the media below the point where Google can learn.
$8,000 a month: search, SEO and light social
Two ways to spend the same money. Route A hires specialists; Route B buys one bundle.
| Line item | Route A: specialists | Route B: one package |
|---|---|---|
| Google Ads media | $3,700 (daily $121.71) | $4,950 (daily $162.83) |
| Ads management | WebFX PPC Lite, $750 ($1,200 first month) | Included in Spork Basic Full-Stack |
| SEO | WebFX SEO Silver, $2,900 (up to 150 keywords, 2 assets a month, 6-month commitment) | Included (“Standard SEO”) |
| Social media | BizIQ Engage, $599 (8 posts, 2 platforms; $998 setup) | Included (“Basic Social Media”) |
| Package fee | Spork Basic Full-Stack, $2,999 (covers up to $10,000 of managed spend; also basic content and email) | |
| Email software | ActiveCampaign Plus, $49 | ActiveCampaign Plus, $49 |
| Total | $7,998 | $7,998 |
| Search leads at $93.69 | About 39 | About 53 |
Route A clears Google’s 30-conversion guidance, buys a defined SEO scope and costs about $113 per paid lead in media plus management. Route B puts $1,250 more into media because one fee covers five services, but each service gets a “basic” or “standard” slice. Ask Spork, or any bundle seller, how many hours and pieces each line includes before you compare. Management fee math for search accounts at $2,000, $10,000 and $50,000 of spend is in our PPC management pricing guide.
$25,000 a month: senior strategy plus a full channel mix
| Line item | Route A: fractional CMO plus specialists | Route B: one full-service agency |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy and oversight | Fractional CMO at $7,000, the low end of MarketerHire’s $7,000 to $12,000 band (15 to 20 hours a week) | Included in agency hours |
| Google Ads media | $10,000 (daily $328.95) | $14,000 (daily $460.53) |
| Ads management | WebFX PPC Pro, 15% of spend = $1,500 ($2,250 first month) | Included |
| SEO | WebFX SEO Silver Plus, $4,200 (3 assets a month) | Included |
| Content | WebFX Content Basic, $1,800 (3 assets) | Included |
| Email software | ActiveCampaign Plus at 10,000 contacts, $189 billed yearly | Not stated; budget separately |
| Call tracking | WebFX add-on, $100 (25 numbers) | Not stated |
| Agency retainer | Red Branch Bronze+, $10,925 for 80 hours across strategy, content, automation, social, ads, SEO and design | |
| Total | $24,789 | $24,925 |
| Search leads at $93.69 | About 107 | About 149 |
Route B buys more media because one retainer covers everything, but 80 hours spread across eight services is about 10 hours each. Route A buys a strategist who does not profit from the execution fees, plus defined SEO and content volume. Neither is right by default; the deciding question is who sets the plan and checks the work. The role, revenue fit and year-one math against a full-time hire are in what a fractional CMO costs.
What you get at each price
Use this to sanity-check a proposal. If a quote promises far more than the published packages at the same price, ask which hours, and whose.
| Monthly fee | What published packages include | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| $99 to $399 | 10 designed posts (Feedbird $99); 4 posts on 1 platform (BizIQ Reach $399); Google Ads management for up to $3,000 of spend and 2 campaigns (GrowPep $399); 1 hour of senior SEO consulting (Digitaleer $200) | Strategy, content, more than one channel |
| $500 to $1,000 | Small business SEO from $500 (Thrive), about 4.5 hours at the Ahrefs average of $111/hr; Google, Bing and Shopping ads management up to $5,000 of spend (WebFX Lite $750); 12 image posts on Facebook and Instagram with replies (LYFE Good $750) | Content production, landing pages, multi-channel reporting |
| $1,000 to $3,000 | 20 hours of design, writing, ads and social (SkyeLine $1,999); 3 content assets (WebFX $1,800); 2 to 3 services with a monthly review (Illumine8 Essential $2,800+); SEO, content, email, social and PPC management on up to $10,000 of spend (Spork Basic $2,999) | Senior strategy time, video, CRO testing |
| $3,000 to $10,000 | Strategy-only fractional CMO, 5 to 10 hours a week ($3,000 to $6,000); paid media with landing page and ad design (Upgrow from $3,200); SEO from 150 to 300 keywords (WebFX $2,900 to $9,200); 4 to 8 services with CRO and dashboards (Illumine8 $5,300+ to $8,900+); 60 agency hours (Red Branch Bronze $8,625) | A full department; at the low end, more than two channels in depth |
| $10,000 to $30,000+ | 80 to 200 agency hours across every service (Red Branch $10,925 to $25,000); B2B paid media management (Refine Labs from $14,000); full demand and media service (Refine Labs from $26,000) | Media, which is still billed on top |
How much to spend on digital marketing: percent of revenue
Price the work first, then check the total against what companies like yours spend. These benchmarks cover total marketing (people, agencies, software and media), not digital alone.
| Benchmark | Marketing as % of revenue | Monthly at $1M revenue | Monthly at $5M revenue |
|---|---|---|---|
| The CMO Survey 2026, median of 154 US companies | 5% | $4,167 | $20,833 |
| The CMO Survey 2026, mean | 8.96% | $7,467 | $37,333 |
| The CMO Survey 2026, B2B services (n=41) | 10.07% | $8,392 | $41,958 |
| The CMO Survey 2026, professional services industry (n=12, directional) | 6.84% | $5,700 | $28,500 |
| The CMO Survey 2026, companies under $10M revenue (n=20, directional) | 13.34% | $11,117 | $55,583 |
| Gartner 2026 CMO Spend Survey (401 leaders, mostly large companies) | 7.8% | $6,500 | $32,500 |
| SBA rule of thumb, 2012 blog post (old; assumes 10% to 12% margins) | 7% to 8% | $5,833 to $6,667 | $29,167 to $33,333 |
Sources: The CMO Survey’s 2026 Topline Report (median) and Firm and Industry Breakout Report (pages 124 to 126), run by Duke’s Fuqua School with Deloitte and the AMA; Gartner’s 2026 release; and an archived SBA community blog post from 2012 that is no longer on sba.gov. Digital is taking a growing share: in the same CMO Survey breakout (page 127), digital marketing spend rose 8.20% on average over the prior 12 months, against 1.74% for marketing spend overall.
Turn the sample budgets around to see which revenue each one fits. $2,000 a month is $24,000 a year: 5% of $480,000 in revenue, or the SBA’s old 8% of $300,000. $8,000 a month is $96,000: 5% of $1.92 million, or the B2B services mean on about $953,000. $25,000 a month is $300,000: 5% of $6 million, or 10.07% of about $2.98 million. If your number lands far outside these, the objective-and-task method in our guide on how to set a marketing budget prices the plan from your lead target instead.
Digital strategist cost and what digital marketers charge per hour
A digital strategist costs $20 to $75+ an hour on Upwork and $100 to $149 an hour at a US digital strategy agency. The table prices a 20-hour strategy engagement at each published rate.
| Who | Published rate | 20 hours costs | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital strategist, entry level | $20 to $40/hr | $400 to $800 | Upwork |
| Digital strategist, intermediate | $40 to $75/hr | $800 to $1,500 | Upwork |
| Digital strategist, expert | $75+/hr | $1,500+ | Upwork |
| US digital strategy agency | $100 to $149/hr | $2,000 to $2,980 | Clutch, updated Sept 2026 |
| Fractional CMO, hourly | $150 to $350/hr | $3,000 to $7,000 | MarketerHire |
| Employed marketing specialist (wages only) | $37.87/hr ($78,760 a year, May 2025 median) | $757 before benefits | BLS |
Upwork’s figures are typical rates from historical contracts worldwide, so a US-based strategist at $40 an hour is unusual enough to ask who does the work. On the agency side, Clutch says most digital marketing agencies on its platform charge $25 to $49 an hour across all countries, while US agencies sit at $100 to $149, and reviewed digital strategy projects typically cost $10,000 to $49,999. In my view, a 20-hour strategy sprint from a senior person is the best-value first purchase for most firms under $2 million in revenue, because it decides which of the rows above you buy at all.
How much does a digital marketing campaign cost?
A campaign is a fixed-length push, so price it for the whole run, setup included. Here is a 90-day Google Ads launch for a business services firm aiming for 30 leads a month at the $93.69 median:
- Media: 30 x $93.69 = $2,810.70 a month, or $8,432.10 over three months, entered as a $92.46 daily budget.
- Management, option 1: WebFX Lite, $1,200 first month plus 2 x $750 = $2,700. Campaign total: $11,132.10.
- Management, option 2: GrowPep Essential, $199 setup plus 3 x $399 = $1,396. Campaign total: $9,828.10.
- Before launch: conversion tracking that counts real leads, not page views, or the 30 conversions measure nothing.
One-time strategy work is priced as a project: 1909 Digital lists a single audit at $3,000 and three strategy documents for $5,000, and its ads package starts at $1,500 a month plus a $3,000 setup fee (1909 Digital pricing). Larger digital marketing projects reviewed on Clutch range from $10,000 to $49,999.
How to check a digital marketing quote in 10 minutes
- Split fee from media. Ask for the management fee and the ad spend as separate lines. A single blended number makes cheap quotes look better than they are.
- Divide by hours. Fee divided by hours should land near the $100 to $149 US agency band. A $3,000 retainer with 10 hours is $300 an hour.
- Find the breakpoints. Ask for the fee at your current spend and at double it.
- Add setup and the first month. Year-one cost is setup plus 12 months, not the monthly price times 12.
- Price the exit. A 12-month agreement at $3,200 plus $2,500 setup (Upgrow) is a $40,900 commitment; a 6-month minimum at $14,000 (Refine Labs) is $84,000.
- Check ownership. Google’s guide to working with third parties says an agency “must set up a separate Ads account for you” and that “it’s not possible to guarantee a specific ad position.” A quote that breaks either is a red flag.
SEO is the line where quotes vary most; the ranges by business size and pricing model are in our guide to how much SEO costs. If you already have two or three proposals on the table and want an independent read on which one fits your numbers, you can book a consultation and bring them.

Multi-channel packages run $2,800 to $8,900+ a month, and ad spend is extra. A realistic one-channel plan with media, management, SEO advice and email software comes to about $2,000 a month, which is 5% of $480,000 in revenue.
How much do digital marketers charge?
Clutch's data on 106,043 digital marketing companies shows most charge $25 to $49 an hour worldwide, while US agencies charge $100 to $149 an hour. These cover people, agencies, software and media together, so price your plan first and use the percentages as a check.
Is ad spend included in digital marketing prices?
Almost never. Every agency price on this page excludes the money paid to Google, Meta or LinkedIn. WebFX, for example, charges $750 a month to manage up to $5,000 of Google spend, and the spend itself is billed separately by Google. Always ask for the management fee and the media budget as two separate lines on the quote.
What is the average cost of digital advertising?
For Google search ads, the 2026 WordStream and LocaliQ benchmarks put the median cost per click at $5.42 and the median cost per lead at $66.69 across 23 industries. Business services pay $5.87 per click and $93.69 per lead; attorneys pay $9.87 and $131.63. LinkedIn requires at least $10 a day and suggests $25 for new advertisers.
